Kate O’Brien Banned
2024 is the 50th anniversary of the death of Limerick writer Kate O’Brien.
At Opera Workshop we are getting to know Kate O’Brien through her work and her life, with a view to creating a new operatic work, ‘Banned’. A celebrated playwright, journalist and novelist Kate O’Brien often referenced Limerick as a thinly disguised ‘Mellick’ in a number of her novels. Her work was repeatedly banned both by the Irish censors and by Franco in Spain.
Opera Workshop brings together a number of artists to celebrate the many achievements of one of Limerick’s most renown writers and explore the potential for a new opera production.
Sharing ideas and working together in recent days in the Belltable were:
Ann Blake, writer and actor
Lorraine Galvin, soprano
Shirley Keane, Artistic Director Opera Workshop
Fiona Linnane, composer
We look forward to sharing some of the new scenes and ideas on Kate O’Brien’s birthday
at the Belltable Theatre, Limerick next December 2024.
